The Tony-winning musical The Lion King has been astonishing audiences since 1997. One of the many aspects that keeps theatergoers coming back is the show’s astonishing puppets, manipulated by the talented cast. While the blockbuster family show is playing Appleton’s Fox Cities Performing Arts Center through May 5, two of The Lion King’s puppet experts gave the Post-Crescent an inside look at the stage magic. In the video below, puppet master Michael Reilly explains the interesting concept behind meshing the actors’ appearance with the puppets. Tony Freeman, who plays winged majordomo Zazu, explains the challenges of doing two acting jobs—the puppet’s and his own. Check out what the guys have to say (and get a peek at Zazu in action), then get your tickets to see The Lion King.
